Monday was a long night for the Gators. The almost two hour bus ride up to Carriere was followed by a lackluster falling to Pearl River Central 11-1. The beginning of the game looked promising, though, as Gautier opened up scoring in the first inning when Daniel Colon drew a bases loaded walk with one out, scoring one run. But once again, the Gators struggled to find their groove at the plate, having the next two batters retire in succession with strikeouts, unable to make the Blue Devils pay.
In the bottom of the first inning, Pearl River Central tied things up at one when Ethan Songy doubled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. The Blue Devils took the lead in the second inning when Hayden Dunhurst was struck by a pitch with the bases loaded, but Gautier was able to escape clinging to the 2-1 deficit.
Then, in the blink of an eye, the Blue Devils pulled away for good, scoring five runs in the third inning. This came thanks to a walk by Nolan Walther and a double by Dunhurst. A flurry of hits and walks would then chase Gautier starter Justin Thomas from the bump. He allowed six hits and seven runs over three innings, striking out two Blue Devils. Daniel Colon came on in relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings. Pearl River Central racked up a total of nine hits in the game, walking eight times. Songy, Dunhurst, and Ethan Everett all had multiple hits for the Blue Devils.
Walther led things off on the mound for Pearl River Central. He went five innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out five. Neuman came in relief to start the sixth inning, striking out two and forcing Lars Saunders to ground out.
Jordan Irving led Gautier at the plate. He went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Gautier Gators Varsity in hits. Kaden Irving, Thomas, Skyler Roberts, and Jacob Cochran also scattered singles throughout the game, but were left stranded.
The Gators are still searching for answers with another set of back to back road trips on the horizon. A quick trip down the interstate to St. Martin waits on Friday night (JV at 5, Varsity at 7) with a trip north to Vancleave (Varsity at 11) on Saturday.
